The use of Livestock Guardian Dogs is an important part of our farm security. It’s what lets us sleep at night knowing our livestock are safe.

Over 50 years of experience in the care, training and rearing of pure-bred dogs, and being familiar with many of the livestock guardian dog (LGD) breeds, we knew that using a livestock guardian  to protect our flock was the way to go!

People have used livestock guardian dogs to protect livestock for over three thousand years. There are a variety of breeds to choose from - all with different attributes that make them desirable for this important work.

The most well-known of these breeds in the United States are the Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherds, Akbash and Maremma. Many also work as family and home guardians, and several are assistance dogs to their disabled owners as they are sturdy enough to provide physical support.

They are generally aloof toward strangers and their size alone is rather intimidating. Though strong, independent-minded and protective, they are normally gentle with children and livestock alike.

There are a number of things to consider when using dogs to protect your livestock.  The breeder you select is paramount. The temperament of the dogs is critical - after all, they are supposed to protect your animals, but you do not want to worry about them becoming a liability.
